FUNERAL DIRECTORS ENGLEFIELD GREEN WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILED IN SPECIAL CEREMONY

Nearly three years ago, Englefield Green resident John Scott, commented to friends that the village’s fallen heroes of the World Wars and of conflicts around the world had not been properly recognised. He set about fundraising, so that a monument could be provided to acknowledge the role played by the 205 servicemen.

Last month the beautiful memorial you see in the photograph was unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey during a special ceremony. The monument, which comprises seven granite columns featuring the names of the servicemen from the village, was engraving and installed by the skilled staff of Lodge Brothers Memorial department.

Mr Scott had ventured into the Englefield branch of Lodge Brothers and met with Area Manager, Richard Leachman and the then Arranger, Susan Areington to discuss his vision. This was subsequently shared with Mr Chris Lodge, one of the Directors of the Company, and the result (after much deliberation and hard work) was seen for the first time by an invited audience of one hundred people.

Toys Donated to Bellfields “Little Fishes” Play Group by J.Monk & Sons

J.Monk & Sons of Guildford have always been very supportive of local community projects, so when we were approached by St Peters Shared Church, Bellfields to help out with the “Little Fishes” toddler group, we were only too pleased.

We began by sending out an appeal to our staff for the donation of toys suitable for 1-4 year olds. The response was overwhelming and the toys come tumbling in!

Bellfields is one of the most deprived areas in Surrey, so having somewhere safe for children to play and learn is a great community asset.

Beverley Lodge and Paul Bye spent a few hours with the children handing over prams, ride-on toys, dolls, a trampoline, building blocks and aprons for painting and crafting, amongst other items, and had a great time. The children were delighted to be able to help unpack the boxes and see what was inside.

Karen Collins who assists with the running of Little Fishes said, “It was really kind of J Monk & Sons to support our toddler group. We keep our attendance fees very low at just £1 per family, in order that children from underprivileged families are still able to come. Many of the toys that we have are old, and it’s hard for us to keep up with replacing broken ones because funds are very limited. To have new toys donated is brilliant and it really helps us keep things fun for the children.”

March has been a busy month with celebrations all month round. Firstly Mother’s Day was celebrated in style this year with beautiful elegant window displays in honour of all the mothers who are no longer with us as well as the mothers who are. Some of  Lodge Brothers branches such as funeral directors Ashford decorated their windows using a pink-themed Mother’s Day display at the weekend .

One client brought in a card and was very grateful for having it included in the display in remembrance of her mum. The poem “My Mother Kept a Garden” was displayed in the window which has some lovely thoughts about the caring  and nurturing nature of mothers.

St Patrick’s Day was marked on the 17th March 2016 at funeral directors Feltham, traditionally, the day is celebrated by a visit to Church in the morning, followed by dancing and merriment when the  restrictions of Lent are lifted for one day! The display in the  window shows the Irish flag, a shamrock (hand  knitted by Pat) alongside a bottle of Guinness.

Easter is a time to celebrate with friends and family and a time to remember loved ones who have passed on. What better way to remember our loved ones than by doing something for members of the community. Sharing Easter in the community brightens so many people’s day especially the elderly. Lodge Brothers funeral directors Northolt have arranged an Easter Tea Party for the residents of local nursing homes in and around the various villages.
