RUMM (Remote Utility Monitoring & Management) Limited was founded in 2005 as a result of a spin-out from the University of Glamorgan. Following four years of pre-concept work in conjunction with the University, the company has remained based in South Wales, with the University supporting RUMM both as an equity stakeholder and research partner.

This allows RUMM to carry out cutting edge analysis and forecasting techniques on an ongoing basis, via a number of post-graduate positions. Eco Homes are Spreading all Over the UK

Have you seen petrol prices recently? With the cost of electricity and gas also continuing to rise, living in an eco home is becoming ever more appealing. In response, eco home developments are sprouting all over the country as the desire for a low carbon, low energy consumption style of living grows in popularity.

Earlier this month the Architectural Heritage Week in Dorset opened up seven eco homes to the public for an event entitled Greendar 2012. The aim was to enable people with an interest in eco living to see real life examples of eco homes and to speak to their owners to get ideas on eco improvements they could make to lower their energy bills.

The homes on show varied from an innovative modern eco home to houses built in the 1970s and even a historic listed building dating back to the 1700s. What they all had in common was that they used green building technology, like electricity monitors, solar panels and rainwater recycling, along with eco materials, like recycled plastics, mineral fibre and sheeps-wool, to reduce their carbon footprint. These changes enable the homes’ owners to vastly reduce their energy bills, with one resident paying only £33 per month in gas and electricity.

Greendar 2012 was a huge success, with 260 people visiting the seven eco homes over two days. The event demonstrated the enormous interest and appetite for a more environmentally way of living which can reduce our reliance on gas and electricity.

Dorset’s Olympic Village of eco homes goes on sale

Visitors to Greendar might have been interested to know that just down the road in Portland, south of Weymouth, a whole development of eco homes is now up for sale. What’s more, the eco homes’ previous residents were Olympic and Paralympic athletes competing in sailing events on Dorset’s coast.

Among the residents was Team GB’s Ben Ainslie, who won gold in the Finn Sailing Class, leading to a central area being named Ben Ainslie Square. At the time of writing, half of the 77 eco homes in Dorset’s Olympic Village have now been sold. Now doubt buyers were attracted by the developments’ Olympic links and their communal wood-pellet boilers, rainwater harvesting and low energy lighting.

Gary Neville’s ‘Teletubby’ eco home gets the green light 

Ex-Manchester United footballer and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has now received clearance to build his controversial eco home. After agreeing not to install a 100 foot wind turbine, his plans to construct the Northwest’s first carbon neutral home have been approved.

Harnessing the latest eco design technology, such as ground source heat pumps, sustainable rainwater harvesting and solar panels, Neville’s home will be a ‘Code 6’ eco home, which is the highest available score on the government’s energy rating system. Many people might have booed Gary during his career, but I think his dedication to environmentally friendly eco home design deserves a round of applause.

The weather is not kind to us and when you have a leaky roof it can cause a lot of damage and cost a substantial amount of money.  South London Refurbishments is taking on a project in Clapham Common, where patch repairs have been carried out previously but once a roof has a leak it is sometimes hard to pinpoint where exactly the water penetrates into the property.  We have to remove the roof tiles in its entirety, including ridge tiles, checking the felt and batten underneath for any defects.  We will also be checking the lead flashing, fascia, soffits, gutters and rectify the issues where needed.  We will be fitting new Slate tiles and ridge tiles and then re-fixing all lead and flashing. It goes without saying all rubbish is removed from site and we will carry out a water test on the new roof.

Plumbing & Heating Wimbledon

Squibbs of London are currently working on a property in Wimbledon Village. Work includes painting interior walls and ceilings, adding dado rails to the rooms and painting them with 3 coats of paint chosen by the customer. we also changed the electrics for a ceiling rose. In the plumbing and heating department we were asked to deal with a faulty boiler.  Our plumber took a look at it. We happy happy to say the boiler now works perfectly well.

 2.) In Putney we painted the exterior walls of our client’s property along with rendering and pointing.  We glossed the porch and the frame and finally replaced the joints of the guttering and cleaned the whole lot out.  Whilst there we were approached by two neighbours who asked if we could take a look at and clean out their guttering at the same time. Needless to say that we were happy to oblige!

3.)  We have send our Handyman to Putney, Plumbing & Heating Putney to help a customer with a few small jobs. We put up shelves and assembled furniture as well as other things that needed doing. 

4.) Gardening in Putney.  As part of our regular Garden Maintenance we trimmed the hedge at the front of our client’s, cut the grass at the back did some general weeding and tidying up.

5.) Happy to help no matter what the time. We received a call from a client who is DIY enthusiast this week. The tap in the kitchen had started to drip and rather than calling a plumber they were eager to try changing the washers themselves. With telephone guidance and everyday house hold items such as rubber gloves the annoying drip was banished in no time.

We wait to be able to analyse the details of the policy and comment on what this really means to householders and businesses, but they seem to be saying rear residential extensions could extend to as much as 6 or 8 metres and commercial premises could be extended by 100 to 200 sqm without permission. With all of this though.. ‘the devil is in the detail .‘

dblo are currently negotiating a Section 106 Agreement with Ealing council’s Legal team  on a new build housing development in Greenford. The proposal for 2 new houses was recommended for approval by Ealing’s Planning Department. The 106 concession is for tree planting and boundary improvements.
