Strategic Planning in London

The strategic plan for London - 'The London Plan' - reached
an important stage last week in its development when the
Independent Panel appointed by the Secretary of State to
conduct an Examination in Public of The London Plan
delivered its report to the Mayor and the First Secretary
of State, John Prescott.

The Panel were charged with the responsibility of reviewing
the policies and targets on issues such as transport, planning
and development and affordable housing in the Plan with a
view to assessing whether or not they are reasonable,
achievable and in line with Central Government policy.

The report runs to over 200 pages and it is not surprising: the London Plan is the first strategic planning document to
cover the Capital for over 15 years. Like it or loathe it,
the Panel acknowledge that now there is a Plan again,
virtually everyone welcomes that fact, even if they do not
welcome everything that is in it.
