New opportunities connected
with the waste industry?
On 27 November 2002 the Chancellor of the Exchequer
issued
his Pre-Budget Statement outlining the Government's public
spending plans and policies for its 2003 Budget. It contained
a number of environment-related announcements, particularly
in relation to waste, and was accompanied by the Prime
Minister's Strategy Unit (PMSU) report, "Waste Not, Want Not".
Together, the Pre-Budget Statement and the PMSU have given
important indications of future initiatives to tackle the UK's
increasing waste problem.
If the desired changes are to be made, significant investment
and restructuring of existing waste management systems will
be required. This in turn promises a good supply of business
opportunities in waste management and treatment and related
technology. For the waste industry to deliver, it will also
have to overcome the obstacle of obtaining land in
appropriate locations for new waste management facilities.
