How to clean your marquee

The obvious answer is whenever it needs it so maybe a better question would be how often should you expect to clean a marquee.

A marquee is far more likely to get dirty when being erected/dismantled rather than when it is actually up. If you’re careful when erecting and especially when dismantling the marquee then you can usually get away with a thorough clean only once or twice a season.

There are however a few exceptions:

The dirtiest marquee I have ever had was one that was erected under some trees. When it rained all of the dust and grime was washed off the leaves down on to our lovely marquee. If you’ve got to put a marquee up under trees expect to clean it immediately afterwards.

Rain-skirts by their very nature will always get muddy in the rain, these should be given a wipe over on pretty much every job.

Traffic-film – eventually PVC can have a grey layer build up which is especially difficult to remove. It takes a long time for this to happen (a year or two normally) but at this stage it needs a thorough clean using a chemical. The material also needs irritating (gone over with a brush or similar) to get this off. Once thoroughly cleaned the PVC should be as good as new.

Tree sap is a nightmare to remove.

There are also some things that will never come out:

Petrol/Diesel can stain PVC. This will never come out so avoid them at all costs.

Ingrained mould – this affects many marquees especially those that are stored when still wet. PVC is made of many layers, if a marquee is put away wet or if cheap PVC is used then water can get inside the layers and create mould which will never come out. Incidentally this is one of the reasons we use better quality 500gsm PVC than available elsewhere, it takes far longer for the layers to break down in better quality PVC.

Some garden chemicals can stain – I was shown a marquee recently that had green stains around the rain skirt which seemed to have come from a chemical added to the lawn.

Better quality PVC always helps, we use a lacquer coated PVC as it is easier to clean and lasts longer than the cheap alternatives. Contact us for more Marquee hire advice

Marquees in summertime … what could be a more romantic venue for the perfect outdoor celebration, from baby showers to wedding, anniversaries to work functions, there is nothing that quite matches the allure of a marquee venue. Moving into the Autumn the marquee hiring for sale business may well become a little slower, especially in the UK. But as Winter comes, there are many ways for marquees to remain the quintessential destination venue for celebrations. With a few clever additions and adjustments to your basic DIY Marquee and how you use it, business could bloom well into the colder months of the year.

DIY Marquees UK providers of marquees and accessories, which are designed especially to withstand the harsher seasons. With a variety of all year round, 4 season marquees available, there is definitely a marquee for all seasons. From traditional, romantic style marquees to green commercial marquees, Deluxe and Demi marquees, DIY Marquees boasts a spectacular array of features to fail-proof your marquee while ensuring the longevity of the marquee lives up to any UK Winter.

While it is common sense that some weather conditions simply mean that you cannot erect your marquee for fear of life and limb, DIY trusts that this same common sense will prevent clients from risking the integrity of these quality products. Floods, tycoons and other displays of Mother Nature’s greatness should never be taken lightly. However, a good solid rain fall never stopped a DIY marquee from standing tall and true which is mostly down to the superior quality of the products and materials which are used when creating our extensive range of marquees.

Why settle for 500gsm Rip-stop Duracoretex PVC when we can offer a 650gsm Rip-stop Duracoretex PVC Roofs and side panels for marquees with a roof top less than 90sqm. An excellent example of what we have on offer is the Deluxe Demi range which is excellent value for money and quality, for those who want the strongest, most durable and most impressive marquees. This specific is designed for easy use when standing against buildings or toilets. Wind-stop Velcro seals the panels securely preventing the cold from penetrating into the marquee, especially at night or late afternoon events where the weather may have turned. The core of our DIY marquees is a frame of steel pipe work preferred because of the superior strength of this material when compared to other popular materials used for marquee framework. Ground bars anchor the marquee with cross-bracing eaves providing that additional security against any Winter weather.

DIY Marquee experts can also offer you advice on how to set up your marquees in order to buffer against the weather and increase the innate strength of the marquee. We have a fabulous DIY Marquee Planner that conveniently helps you plan the sizes and layout of your marquee. Our Marquee Buyers Guide gives advice on everything you need to consider when buying a marquee.

Heating options to guard against the Winter chill and various lightening options, DIY Marquee professionals are happy to advise you on the best way to heat your marquee as well as the worst (and most dangerous) ways which must be avoided at all costs, so to ensure that safety always comes first. DIY Marquees now sells Indirect Marquee Heaters.

DIY Marquees offer a variety of superior ranges of marquees, including the DIY Marquee green marquee, which has the capacity to meet your clients’ venue, needs to help them set up the event of the year. Hirers are encouraged to look at the online interactive marquee planner and check out the options that are available to help you to make your marquee a suitable venue with all of the trimmings. Not only are the marquees fully aligned to all of the health and safety requirements, in terms of the standards of material DIY Marquees use to construct their marquees, they also meet all legislative requirements and can be beautifully constructed to look like a fairy-tale Christmas. All it takes is a little extra attention to the electrics and you will be able to light your marquee up like a Christmas tree for the ultimate holiday feel.  DIY Marquee is always looking for inspired and interactive ways to make the marquee experience easier and safer for the full lifespan of the marquee and will never leave hirers stuck for new ideas to make their marquee the most desirable and sought after venue.

DIY Marquee Electrical Courses offers 2 excellent options in terms of lighting solutions for marquees. A superior choice of lighting is offered as part of the marquee lighting packages, such as your ultimate marquee chandelier or the retro and classic style marquee festoons. Secondly, and something that is highly recommended for hirers, is to do your own marquee electrics so as to ensure the standards are always compliant and that should any emergency occur, there is always someone on site to assist with the repair. It does not take much lighting to make your marquee look particularly pretty but for those who what a little something more elaborate or complex, consider attending one of the electrics courses aimed specifically at those in the hiring industry. Light courses and PAT lighting course information is available online for those who are ready to take the next step.

DIY Marquees make things simple for marquee business owners, with useful, practical marquee accessories and amazing marquee lighting packages simplicity is key, simply connect the leads together plug into the house/extension lead and you’re done. If your customer needs another power supply, then an additional extension lead would usually do the job.

This simple system is perfect when you’re starting up a marquee hire business but after a while the jobs will become more intricate and so do the electrics. At this point you need to consider attending training courses from our friends at Essential Supplies who are running electrical courses aimed at the marquee hire industry:

Marquee flooring packages are designed to be easy to lay whilst giving one of the best finishes available in a marquee using new carpet, available in red, green or honeybeige.

Included in each package is a non-breathable underlay, this is placed underneath the carpet when laying to prevent the build-up of condensation during your event (grass gives off a lot of water vapour if not covered). Grass is very tough so covering for a week or so will not generally cause any harm.

The marquee flooring is simply nailed in place -hammer, nails, cutting knife and a tool belt are included in the package. Watch our marquee flooring video to see how easy it is to lay.

This is the flooring and method of laying used by most of the marquee hire industry.

Pop Up Marquee for sale tips

Furniture:

  • Unlike marquees furniture is often too expensive to buy so hiring is usually the best solution
  • For a formal atmosphere use larger round tables (5ft for seating 8/9, 5ft6in for seating 10)
  • Use a mixture of smaller tables to create an informal atmosphere (see this article on seating)
  • You can get away with fitting more people in a marquee for a party than for a wedding, a wedding requires more space, but you can squeeze people up a bit at parties.
  • A marquee can hold more people standing than seated (generally around 1.5 times the number seated) but it’s always worth having some seats in rows against the sides of a marquee even if you are leaving the middle completely clear for standing (or using it as a dance floor area)
  • For formal seating remember an easel for table plans (or two for larger functions)
3x3m pop-up diy marquee    3x3m pop-up diy marquee

Dance Floors:

  • Do you want your party to be mainly about the dancing? In which case put the dance floor in the middle so it is very much the centre of attention. If you want it as an option, then put it at one end.
  • Like furniture dance floors can be prohibitively expensive to purchase hiring or making yourself (18mm plywood screwed to battens and stained) are the most common solutions
  • Alternatively, if your marquee is to cover part of a patio or decking area that can be used as a dance floor

Other:

  • Set the marquee up several days in advance and test the lighting and heating (if applicable) at the time of your function just to make sure both are sufficient.
  • People (mainly blokes) will always congregate around the bar. For this reason, always position it near the evening’s entertainment to avoid having two parties. Always aim to keep everyone in one place to maintain the atmosphere so avoid putting the bar in the house or a separate marquee
  • Always have lighting on a dimmer, this gives you the flexibility to supply lighting to eat by and mood lighting to dance by
  • In October to April you will need to heat the marquee  have the heating on for an hour before people arrive to ensure they walk into a wall of warmth
  • In May to September, you might need a heater just to take the chill off in the seating area later in the evening
  • Think of how your guests will arrive – a simple path of carpet with flower pots makes an attractive and inviting entrance to the marquee
  • Think of how your guests will leave – it’s likely to be dark so some form of lighting will be needed to guide people back to their cars
  • You would normally allow one toilet per 40-50 guests. If you don’t have enough available then consider hiring a luxury toilet unit
  • Give neighbours plenty of notice especially if you plan on partying until the early hours
  • Notify the police, it may sound extreme but it allows them to give informed responses (such as finishing time) to any complaint rather than come knocking on your door

DIY Marquees many years’ experience in the marquee selling business always offer sound and valuable advice for their customers. With hundreds of high quality Professional Marquees for sale they are one of the top marquee selling businesses around.

Below is what Stephen the owner of DIY Marquees Commercial Marquees for sale says about marquee design and quality.

“Reality Check -3.7m vs 3m marquee height:

Sometimes the claims of some companies in the marquee sales industry go beyond honest marketing with outlandish statements such as ‘PE material is the same as bullet proof vests’ and arrogant statements such as ‘and don’t believe anyone who tells you different’ without offering any evidence to confirm their claims. At DIY Marquees, we try to take a more positive approach to marketing and an evidence based approach to our marquee design.

With the above in mind we are producing a series of Reality Check articles displaying the pro’s and cons for readers to see why we design marquees the way we do:

The 3.7m vs 3m marquee height is based on a 6m wide marquee with approximately 2m eave/leg height.

The advantages of using a 3.7m high marquee:

  • cheaper to produce
  • more headroom for those taller than 2m

The advantages of using a 3m high marquee:

  • uses wind-resistant 20degree roof angle
  • is used in nearly all commercial marquees

Should you require more headroom in a marquee it is wiser to choose a marquee with additional height in the legs (like our 2.3m eave height Deluxe DIY Marquees for example) rather than a steeper roof angle. A taller leg requires additional bracing but when erected is far more wind-resistant.

Every 9m+ wide marquee in the world we have ever seen uses a roof angle of 20degrees. If ever you find yourself in dispute over what is the stronger marquee design asking them what angle 9m+ wide marquees use and why (they may even sell them themselves!).

Or if you see someone selling 3.7m high marquees look for other shortcuts taken in the design like carport roofs or powder coated framework.
